When my brothers and I were kids, we would tape a small firecracker to the back of a cicada (aka noisy locust). Then we would light the 'cracker and the bug would fly off, soon to become a bomb bursting in the night sky. This was just before the delayed advent of television in my part of the world, when we had to come up with our own entertainment on summer evenings.
