The FCC has taken action 98-153, NPRM 00-163, to allow products to be built to determine whether GPS and other communications are affected by UWB.

IEEE 802.15.3 High Rate Study Group

has a call for 20+ Mbps technology to connect memory-intensive devices like MP3 players or digital cameras to the Internet.

Both Time-Domain and XtremeSpectrum gave presentations at the March IEEE 802 Plenary, and I believe both have chips that deliver 20+Mbps using 20 microwatts of transmit power, conforming to CFR 47 Part 15.209

The receiver takes more energy than the sender, so digital cameras would use less energy than MP3 players. I think system power is < 100mW when receiving and transfering over a PCI bus.

I believe RadioLAN has closed its doors - www.radiolan.com and click on Press Release. They were the first commercial WLAN to use UWB, and I was at one of the beta sites, when the links would go 92 ft, but not 100 ft.

My current view is UWB will be authorized for 15.209 use in October(Personal Area Networks), and after the Dandin Group's Republic of Tonga trial is complete, the FCC will allow UWB at higher power on tribal lands. www.dandin.com

I'm not aware of anything special in antenna configurations, but antenna diversity has been required in previous WLAN applications.
