U.S. heavyweight Siebel Systems Inc. dominates the CRM market and its total sales are expected to top US$1-billion this year. But a host of smaller firms with sales of less than US$100-million are nipping away at the heels of the industry giant. They are building market share by being more nimble, having a clearer focus and offering better prices to customers.

- Has software that is not intrusive on existing systems.

- Can offer products at a significantly lower price.

The analyst also says the CRM market is "not one of those quick shot high-tech areas" that is likely to fade away soon.

"We are talking about a business applications market that is here to stay, and it looks like enterprise focus is going to be on the customer," he says.

"The CRM space is generally acknowledged to be growing very fast and is expected to become larger than ERP [enterprise resource planning]."

Market watchers say profit growth for large data management and analysis software companies should continue to outpace the overall market. Firms in the group experienced average annual growth of 86.8% over the past three years. Observers expect profit growth to drop to 7.6% this year but rebound to 70% next year. By comparison, profits for Standard & Poor's 500 firms are expected to rise 7.7% in 2000 and climb just 6.7% in 2001.
