<Maybe EMC is already doing what that Nishan says it will do as a "breakthrough?">

SRDF over IP is somewhat Storage over IP, but not what I think Nishan is talking about. The IP part of SRDF over IP is a replacement option for a proprietary protocol that runs over WAN (T1, T3) links. By having IP support, the end-user can now aggregate SRDF traffic into the same links he uses for his other IP traffic. This can obviously translate into WAN cost savings. The caveat is that there might be more traffic than an existing link can absorb, necissitating a new additional link. There are still good reasons to do this, as the aggregation effects still apply.

On another front, I think the EMC or some other established storage vendor has previously announced that they are pursuing a SCSI over IP strategy that will complement their SCSI over SCSI and SCSI over FC products. It really only makes sense to pursue this "any-to-any" approach. Some people just LOVE ethernet, and there's no reason to ignore them. if you can make it work.

Personally, I think it's quite dunderheaded to downgrade BRCD and others because of this Nishan stuff. I still believe that it will be a long time before IP-based technologies out-perform FC for data movement, if ever. All of my latest customer experiences back that up.

Does anyone have a link to anything other than Kumar's terse statement?
