You make an interesting suggestion, Karen. Is Donato a stalking horse for the family? Somehow, I doubt it. He doesn't strike me as much of a team player--he is one of those exasperating people who thinks everything that happens is about him. That kind of person would not be acting as part of some larger group plan.

The weird thing is that he thinks that being on the boat that discovered Elian (apparently it was his cousin who did the actual rescuing) gives him some sort of right to be involved.

My theory is that he is involved with Maryslesis, and just as she came to regard herself as a quasi-mother, he (by virtue of his relationship with her) began to regard himself as quasi-father. The trauma that they've undergone--as bizarre as it might seem to the rest of us--may very well be genuine.
