You';re ignoring the other part of Steven's sentences which is- "If you refuse to comply with the law, that's the way it works"
and that unfortunately was the choice The Relatives made. Not to mention that silly Donato, who really did NOT save the boy's life, but decided that somehow just BEING there meant he had a claim of some sort. For HIM to be grabbing Elian and hiding with him is pretty presumptuous.
Heck, I once saved a little girl's life in Hawaii when she got caught in a bad undertow. Went in and dragged her out while her mother screamed helplessly. By the interpretations being tossed around here, the mother, by not leaping in, was in absentia. Obviously she should have had her parental rights terminated, and I should have been given the child. And when the mother reached for her, I should have negotiated before turning her over.
And everyone cheered when I brought her out. I could have sued for invasion of privacy.
