I am curious now. Where can I find figures on the fuel efficiency of electric cars? A Honda Civic will get 40 mpg in mixed driving. The current electrics are in the Civic weight class - indeed they lag the Civic hatchback in utility. So - combining generator efficiency, line losses, charging losses and battery-to-road loses ... what is the coal use of an electric car, say the Honda EV currently on the road? (Hampering the EV is the need to lug around a thousand pounds of batteries containing at best the energy equivalent of four pounds of gasoline!)

A fuel cell hybrid is not much more efficient than a good Carnot-cycle Diesel. Current fuel cells completely waste the carbon in hydrocarbon fuels. And hydrogen is impractical as a small vehicle fuel. Jmo.
