Interesting hook, but here's what you seem to really get on non-Sun hardware for your $75:

Solaris 8 w/zero tech support (pricing available only by contacting Sun)
Star Office (another attempt to increase user base after the last failed)
Software companion CD w/Unix development tools (no tech support in Sun's service agreements)
Oracle 8i for evaluation/development only (deployment prohibited)

So let's see... either you buy Sun's hardware and pay their exorbitant prices or you get: a package that is useless without purchasing their support contract (pricing not publicly posted), an office suite that has failed in the marketplace, and a database for evaluation only.

In the end, it looks like a bit of bait on the hook and a switch to pay-up service agreements or, worse yet, an overpriced hardware requirement prior to getting a full software bundle, even if it is mostly for evaluation.

I have to admit. It compares well with those "how much would you pay?" late night TV commercials.

JC, do you think Scott McNealy will "high stick" me for pointing out the reality of this little bundle :-)

Mike
