Frank - I'm with you and your sources. I've read several articles indicating that handsets with the ability to toggle between various modes are in the works.

The recent decision by the ITU not to endorse any particular cellular modulation scheme prompted this need.

The ITU's decision, based on the fact that adoption of a single technology would saddle the "out" crowd(s) with staggering infrastructure costs (and therefore invite non-compliance), would adversely affect only "roaming". The ability to roam among various standards requires that the handset be able to toggle to the appropriate scheme.

However, wireless' point stands, in the context of handsets in the local market.

I expect that there will be two layers of handsets: non-roaming, a la wonk, and premium, roaming handsets, for the global jet setters.

Regards,

Jim
