Regarding your ideas of gathering company information by personal visits by local internet users:

In 1993 I told my father in Sunnyvale that I had invested in VLNC and I couldn't get him interested enough to go check out Valence when they were next door in San Jose. He's 83 and a retired machinist rather that an investor, so I didn't push it. Basically, I ended up just dropping the name to him in case he heard any of his cronies talking about it or saw references in the local papers. Of course start-ups in Silicon Valley are ubiquitous so the chances were kinda slim. But the point is, I wanted what you are talking about - a flesh and blood opinion about a company that had piqued my interest.

I think the questionable objectiveness of any reporting, the lack or variability of professionalism, the unknown motives of the reporter, etc. would diminish the results. (I remember you wondered about the authenticity of Matthew's posts regarding Morty). There sure is a lot of room for abuse (visions of Bre-X come to mind).

Maybe the best solution is a first hand visit by the investor him/herself. But that's impractical for all but very large investors who are actually making a living off their investments in carefully selected companies.
