Bert. I am in Canada and we have a similar medical system. The biggest problem is long waits for critical appointments. It can be months for cat scans, for example, yet the systems lie empty due to an arcane state cost structure that charges the system a high fee for every scan, yet using the scanners 24/7 would reduce the cost to a fraction. You can get a scan of your cat(yes a cat scan) for $200 after closing when vets need the use of the equipment. For you it is $1000, paid by the medical plan, but a cost non the less.

The problem is the fee for service structure has led to the doctors breaking their actions into as many little fees as possible and the goverment tries to counter it. The doctors then do tests because they get a fee for doing the test and another for interpreting it. illions of wasted tests. In addition the doctors al own shares in the testing facilities...a clear conflict.

In Canada we are in between the USA system and the Eurpoean system. We may criticise the USA system, but the USA has a higher rate of college graduates than europe. It may be free, but few get to go. That is very similar to saying few can go because it costs so much. Why do so few in Europe go to college? is it because so many are taken into industry and technical schools? If that is the case why is the European worker so bad in productivity?
A socialist conundrum.
