The bitter truth, and the one that is hammered home in the Old Testament, is that there is an infinite gulf between Creator and creature that only God can bridge. Since God does not owe us existence, He can hardly owe us anything else. Until we learn that, we cannot proceed. "Fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom".

The tale of Sodom is meant to show how serious God is in demanding righteousness. Remember, Sodom and Gomorrah were violating one of the principle rules of the ancient world, the rule of hospitality, raping and stealing from guests in their towns. Those who did not directly participate were implicated by their tacit acceptance of the matter. Only Lot and his family were worth saving. And when Lot's wife cast a backward glance, as if she regretted leaving, she was turned into a pillar of salt. Intolerant? Yes. Violent? Yes. Unjust? Well, that is a matter of opinion, I suppose.........
