That probably is the point. But those kind of consequences are...hmmm..how to put it? Well- a holocaust. I mean there were babies and children in Sodom. What about THEM? It just sticks in my craw- like so much else in the Old Testament. It is all so extremely vicious and emotionally ugly. Which is FINE for myths- the Nordic and Roman and Greek myths are also vicious and emotionally ugly(to name just a few other mythic traditions). A primitive and Nomadic people who were fairly violent could be expected to have fairly violent mythology. The curious thing, and the thing I do not understand, is why any modern person would get any comfort out of believing in such a system- even with the "new and improved" God of the New Testament thrown in. I know people do- and I certainly wouldn't do ANYTHING to prohibit the religious practices of anyone (as long as they aren't hurting anyone)- but I will never understand myth belief.

I can understand believing in a loving absolutely kind being, all knowing and all powerful- that might be comforting- but very few people seem to believe in THAT kind of being.
