Look at the context of that event in 1998. The interest rate environment was VERY DIFFERENT! That's all we have here: an overheated economy and a FED that's going to raise rates to slow it down. that didn't exist in 1998.

Steve, Note that in 1998, the financial markets worldwide were just as bad as the economic conditions in Asia etc. That is why we had a doom and gloom outlook presented by most of the analysts. Right now the interest rates are inching up but the economies woldwide are not in major crisis.

Of course the FED can put foreign economies in a lot of trouble very quickly and that starts the flight to quality again, causing rates to drop.
