It should not be surprising that Java is making the gains that it is. After all, most of the non-MSFT players are pushing it hard. It has failed to live up to much of its initial hype.

I must live on another planet because in my work, once we got past the initial hype, talk of Java has pretty much ceased. Note that I was previously developing telephony application server, and now am doing real-time video encode/decode. These are not exactly areas where Java would be useful.
