chic, IBM underwent a big change in their philosophy towards their competition and the rest of the world about 15 years ago. That was with regard to whether they'd sell any of their top notch technology on the open market. They used to sell nothing, now they'll sell about anything to anybody. An example was about 8 years ago when they started selling their mainframe chipset (CPUs, I/O, the whole thing) to Hitachi, who was their #1 competitor in their #1 selling product. If the price were right, they'd probably make chips for Sun.
