Wait a minute. Where did you hear that nickel hydride is toxic? It is known as the "green" battery, and is known for being non-toxic. They have been chopped up with an ax with nothing harmful spewing out because it is nearly dry inside. It is one of the safest batteries ever made. Now lithium based batteries are a different matter. If they are improperly charged they can catch fire. Not so with NiMH. I think that it is only a matter of time before a lithium battery catches fire on an airliner, and all hell will break loose. There already have been nasty fires where they are produced.
