I doubt that skeletons are the motivation for pseudonyms; it's more often a safety issue.
X and I both used our real names for a long time, but she received a very threatening e-mail (as a matter of fact, both Janice Shell and I were called really disgusting names in it, too), a sort of "I know where you live" thing. We believed that person was not stable and X took immediate precautions.

There are also many who can't use real names for occupational reasons, or because they are "famous" in some way.

BUt whatever the reasons, I agree with you that SI should be vigilant about terminating anyone who maliciously reveals private information for any reason.
