Beijing, May 25 (Bloomberg) -- China Telecom Group and China Netcom Corp. are likely to win licenses to operate mobile-phone businesses next year, the China Enterprise News reported, citing an unnamed government official. That would bring to four the number of mobile phone companies operating in China, including existing operators China Mobile Telecommunications Group and China United Telecommunications Group. More severe competition in the mobile-phone market would result, the paper said.

China Telecom (Hong Kong) Ltd. rose 2.3 percent after the U.S. Congress passed a bill granting China permanent normal trade relations status.
