Dear Mr. Mossberg,
"For just moving your ACT and QuickBooks databases at first, and then regularly thereafter, I suggest a program called LAPLINKnk 2000(www.laplink.com), which moves data very quickly and accurately over cables between two PCs. I use it all the time to keep my desktop and laptop PCs in synch, with the company's extra-cost, but ultra-fast, USB cable option."
Something new has appeared on the internet that also solves this problem and it doesn't involve worrying about floppies or cables, it is call network attached storage.
I use www.juston.com. You log into the site establish an account and upload your files over the internet to a directory. You can create the directory to look much like one on your PC.
I have found this very convenient for moving bookmark files, word processing files, and data files between computers hundreds of miles apart.
My understanding is that the company which was recently bought by Novell will soon be offering the ability to synchronize your data on your personal computer with the copy on the internet in net storage with version control. This will mean that when you save a file in a your favorite directory on your personal computer, it will automatically be copied over the internet to net storage When you get to the computer at the office, you will find the latest copy on the internet waiting for you. That solves the problem of not knowing which floppy has the latest version on it. It also eliminate the problem of overwriting the good file with the bad one because you can't figure out which file is the latest, or taking into the office the wrong floppy and being stuck.
I saw this advanced version demonstrated at a Novell trade show. Used together with Novell's directory technology which provides tight security and control over access to the net storage over the internet, this could be a very interesting soultion to all of our problems with moving data between computers.
Sincerely,
Paul Fiondella

Now wouldn't it be nice if before I sent it, the people at Just-On would have returned some of my telephone calls? |
