Total US market cap is around $17 billion. $1.7 billion (or 10%) is in Money Market funds. It is quite a stretch to call these "money in the sidelines", especially given short term returns of close to 6.5%. Money market funds have fluctuated around 10% of stock market cap for the last couple of years. I expect the percentage to rise substantially, as the bubble deflates.
