It was the recognition of the futility of infinite regress in the rationalization of premises, the search for the Greek equivalent for a "theory of everything", that was a significant cause of the deterioration of the Greeks. The pursuit itself left Plato in confusion as is well represented in The Symposium. When knowledge itself is doubted the Tower of Babble is raised higher. The center cannot hold. Mere anarchy is unleashed on the world. The profusion of confusion is so great that communication breaks down and polity dissolves. The result is that the inheritor of Plato, Alexander, arises to simplify the knot of confusion by cutting it with the sword. This destroys further vain and futile intellectual dabbling and replaces it with the blood and guts of war. But Greece went out with a whimper. There was no chaotic end to it much like the case of Britain. Come confusion, come delusion!
