The discussion got kicked off by the rather startling question of whether dogs have souls.
Dogs are clearly conscious animals. So to ask if they have "souls" moves the discussion into theology and seeks something that is not just conscious mind. So I am working with the concept of "soul" as something distinct from mind and body. "Immortal soul", something that survives the body.

I don't believe in such a thing.

I'm quite certain that I have a body and a mind. And so far, the qualities I have heard ascribed to the soul can be explained (to my satisfaction so far) as being qualities of the mind. (The mind as a phenomenon of the body, biophysics at work. Meat.) I have no evidence that convinces me that there is a supermaterial thing, a spiritual emanation that indwells us and goes on once our meat dies. In fact, I would have no idea how to identify and characterize such a thing.

In this matter, I am clearly afoul of Judeo-Christian-Islamic tradition as well as Hindu. Souls are utterly crucial to these religions, because without them the moral imperative to live well in preparation for the afterlife is disabled.
