GM, Ford, and Chrysler did exactly what you described for years. People loved the fins, the chrome and the sheer mass of big Detroit iron. Over the last 10-15 years they have gotten better but I can't remember the date of the antitrust trials of the big three. Wait a minute, there never were any antitrust trials of the big three. Let's see, they lost market share to the Japanese and the Germans because their products weren't made as well. Then the Big 3 figured they better improve their products to stay in business because all the trade tariffs weren't doing the job. It turns out people will abandon products from companies that aren't serving their needs if there is an inexpensive, full-featured, easy to use and convenient alternative. Companies that have that alternative gain market share, even if the dominant companies have the government stack the deck against them.

I guess most people feel their needs are being well served by microsoft, or there really isn't a good alternative to Wintel for the average consumer; or both, or Wintel would be losing market share.
