Does your dictionary have numbered definitions for the word? I usually accept a numbered definition as satisfactory evidence of semantic spread or ambiguity. Sure, if I say "I hate the Albanians" that is hatred. But if I say "I hate Chrysler products", is that hatred? I'd say that would be a bit of a reach to say yes.

On the one hand, I'm delighted to see someone actually use the dictionary. Otoh, I want to counsel caution... a dictionary is necessarily a compact work and cannot do true justice to semantics, especially evolving semantics. And as anyone who has spent time around teenagers knows, the use of the word "hate" is one of the frontiers of our language. Kind of like the adjectives "radical" and "extreme" ... they have been co-opted to mean things you or I would consider neither radical nor extreme. Groovy, perhaps. <g>
