Sorry, but I didn't find the post that gave the url to the Jaz problem site but remember that several folks gave testimonials there about how their Jaz drive just started making "strange" clicking and other sounds and finally failed. One of the posts there was almost identical to one posted here by Rocky Reid... You might ask him as I'm sure he would be able to direct you to the proper url. I might have read it on the Civil IOM thread... just not sure, but it was just after the Jaz disk recall announcement I think. There were also some posts on the site in question that said that they had used Jaz drives and loved them and had had not problems at all. There are of course some "I hate IOMEGA" sites by disgruntled former IOM employees that gather all the negative infomation that they can find... I',m afraid I didn't save that url either. By doing a proper search on Yahoo or Alta Vista, you might dig up some of these negative sites.
Regarding the recalled 75,000 Jaz drives, if only one component needs to be replaced, then I would think that these could be later resold after remanufacture and certification, so all would not be lost. With the new pricing of the Jaz drive now, I could see IOM marketing waiting a few months to gather sales data before considering the release of Jaz 2, if and when they have it out of the lab and ready to tool up for the production line. Sounds like their production lines are pretty busy and wonder how they could dove-tail another new line into the ones already humming along. With the recent Syquest earning figures, KE may bide his time on any Jaz 2 release until he feels that there is a need to fend off the competition. You can be sure that KE has thought about the development of the rewritable CD-ROM technology and even the possible use of HOLOGRAPHIC STORAGE CRYSTALS in his R & D labs. It would be interesting to know just where the envelope is being pushed at Roy, Utah, and a the other R & D labs out in California.
I compare the Zip drive to a brief case... just about the right size to transfer "stuff" from one computer to another or from one place to another. After all one doesn't use a "sea trunk" to carry around day to day files and manuscripts, which is about what you would have if you had to burn a new CD ROM to carry your stuff around. A brief case Zip cart. is just about right. Now a 200 Meg brief case wouldn;t be too bad to have though! That one is very likely to in the near future I think, even before the n-hand is put on the shelves.
