CORRECTED - Sonera may consider joint bid for Orange-source
In HELSINKI story ``Sonera may consider joint bid for Orange -source'', please read in sixth paragraph ``...but it declined to comment...'' instead of ``...but it denied reports...'' (correcting France Telecom's response to reports).

A corrected version follows.

HELSINKI, May 26 (Reuters) - Finnish telecom operator Sonera would consider a joint bid for British operator Orange, but is not planning such an offer with Dutch peer KPN Telecom , industry sources told Reuters on Friday.

``There is no basis for a link between Sonera and KPN (for an Orange bid), but until Orange is sold there are many possibilities,'' the source said.

When asked if this meant Sonera might consider a joint offer with another partner for Orange, the source said: ``Yes''.

Recent speculation had linked the Finnish and Dutch companies with an Orange bid.

A Sonera spokesman declined to comment on whether the company was interested in Orange, which is being divested by Vodafone AirTouch (quote from Yahoo! UK & Ireland: VOD.L) as part of its takeover of Germany's Mannesmann .

France Telecom has been mentioned as a strong candidate to buy Orange, which is seen as a tasty morsel in the consolidating European telecom market, but it declined to comment on Friday on reports that it was in exclusive negotiations to buy the U.K. operator.

Sonera, Finland's biggest operator, has seen its European profile raised over the past few months after it won a Spanish third generation mobile licence as part of a consortium and took part in auctions for similar licences in Britain and Germany.
