I think you miss the flaw in my thinking. I think there are some very natural reasons for some monopolies. Standardization being one. MSFT benefited from this and this is ok. But they have not been responsible. It was not innovation that drove them to write exclusionary provisions in their contracts with the computer manufacturers. That was just plain old greed now wasn't it? And it was greed at the expense of innovation and competition in markets that they were not already in. This wasn't innovation or even a desire to be innovative. It was just predatory. They were seeking to leverage their monopoly position into new markets. This is the behaviour that the government has found punishable. This is what anti-trust laws were drafted to prevent.

I should warn you that I don't think my flawed thinking extends to this issue, even though the government seems to agree with me.
