Williams Communications is considering building an IP backbone running parallel to their ATM backbone. They can build it for a fraction of what others would pay because they already own the dark fiber and colocation facilities. An IP backbond is simpler to manage and would allow
Williams to cut its cost for provisioning of bandwidth. When they built their network, they selected ATM because of its reliability. New technologies such as MPLS are offering some of the same ATM features on a network running pure IP.
