Beijing, May 26 (Bloomberg) -- Globalstar Telecommunications Ltd., the only satellite-telephone company that hasn't filed for bankruptcy or shut down, expects to have as many as 100,000 subscribers in China in two to three years.

The company yesterday announced the start of commercial service in China, initially covering the northern half of the country. Nationwide coverage is expected next year.

``Candidly, we think there are going to be good markets in all regions of China,'' said Eric J. Zahler, president of Loral Space & Communications Ltd., which owns 40 percent of Globalstar. There are places ``even in the Beijing area where the cell service isn't built out adequately to provide good service,'' he said.

Globalstar's local partner is China Spacecom, a company set up by China Telecom, the nation's largest phone company, and two other state enterprises.
