I would tend to agree with your appraisal...that restored emotional/psychological confidence is needed.

Some quick off the cuff thoughts regarding your theory:

I believe there are some factors that help determine how much time is needed to heal the psychological wounds.

How high was the previous emotional/psychological high? was it sustained and/or a long term pattern? how low was the low?

Was the psychological low a shared experience, did it transcend groups/classes/sectors of people/investors? did the event create more distance between individuals/groups or was there created a feeling of sympatico and empathy?

Are there any significant events (need not be of financial nature, but might be) on the horizon or in the immediate future? again these events need to be of a nature that are common to a large segment of people...anything from Memorial Day to summer vacation to NBA Finals, etc...

Have to run...just some random thoughts re: your observation.
