To All: Off-topic question ==> Who is it that moves the markets?

For example, even before the news broke the other day about a potential budget deficit agreement, the markets had already reacted positively. I'm not particularly slow to pick up on news breaks, but if we assume that ordinary investors move markets, I simply can't believe ordinary investors had time to see the news from any public source, digest it, and react that quickly.

This leaves me wondering--who gets what news, when, and in sufficient time to move the markets? Somehow I get the feeling it isn't us little guys. If not, then exactly who is running the markets?

Maybe I'm naive, but something seems really fishy when ordinary investors are left in the dark (or at work) while the markets move.

Another example is Greenspan and other feds mouthing off. The market reacts so fast that I find it hard to believe most ordinary investors could possibly have been involved in sufficient numbers to have moved the market in reaction to his speech.

So my question is--who moves the markets? Institutions? Ordinary investors who work certainly don't have the time to get the news and react before it's way too late.

So what's an ordinary investor to do in order to get on the inside track, or to get on equal footing with whoever is running the markets?

I'm obviously missing something. Any help with this would be appreciated.

Thanks.
