Does Dr. J really doubt the viability of a migration path for GSM to W-CDMA? And if he does, is that because he doubts the viability of W-CDMA itself, or merely the migration path from GSM? I understand the tech guys in our corner are taking a show-me stance towards EDGE, but do we really question the viability of W-CDMA as a workable 3G standard. I thought our only contentions relative to W-CDMA were (i) that it was intentionally engineered in a way to make it incompatible with 2G CDMA, in an effort to retard the deployment of 2G CDMA, and (ii) it relied on so many core QCOM patents as to entitle QCOM to the same royalty as for QCOM's favored version of 3G CDMA.

This is the question I'd really love answered.

Five years hence, is a W-CDMA dominated 3G world meaningfully less hospitable to QCOM than a CDMA dominated 3G world? Its obvious the markets think so. Starting with George Gilder and Dr. J, Id love to hear that question answered anew from those on our side whom we trust, and are in a position to know.

I would sleep so much better at night knowing that the only battle of real importance to the long-term value of QCOM is CDMA v. EDGE, and that CDMA v. W-CDMA is only a sideshow for those inclined to be misled by smoke and mirrors.
