James, Kenneth, From the Chromatis White Paper.

"To date, metro DWDM has failed to gain the massive acceptance it has in long-distance networks. DWDM optics are much more expensive than the standard 1310 optics used typically in metro transport systems, and they are therefore more difficult to cost-justify in most cases. Although DWDM offers service providers high scalability and can be faster to deploy than SONET alternatives, conventional DWDM products compromise the economics for DWDM by requiring all parts of the network to upgrade to high-speed optics even when there is no corresponding demand. Shotgun deployment of DWDM technology makes sites not needing DWDM pay an unnecessary cost penalty".

I am not trying to be deliberately dense, but I fail to see how Chromatis' strategy of using a different wavelength would extend the life of SONET gear. Please enlighten me.

SONET telecom gear costs two to ten times as much as DWDM. In my opinion, the only way to extend its useful life is to lower the cost to remain competitive. The only reason this stuff is sold today, in view of the other attractive economic and technical alternatives available, is that the traditional carriers are married to SONET. And that will change due to competitive factors. It is a free market. The old line carriers are slow to move, except when bitten in the ass.

The fact that DWDM offers scalability is its strongest selling point. Internet traffic is doubling every three months. Where in the hell do they think that traffic is going? It has to terminate somewhere. Why be stupid and lock yourself into an iron box? Carriers need the flexibility that DWDM provides. Metro DWDM will prevail.

I discount the marketing hype of Chromatis and others. Insofar as the cost benefit of 1300 vs 1500 nanometer transmission, this smells of Madison Avenue BS, kinda like Citgo's M2PG. What in the hell was that anyway?. I never got M2PG on Citgo gas. Maybe I coulda bought some of those pills that convert water into gasoline. Every fool knows that entropy runs uphill, water downhill.
