Shorting against the box.
Here is a scenario: Let us say I have bought 2000 shares of X
@ 10 that I plan to hold for a long term hoping it would touch 30.
The stock rises to 15 and I sense a down turn. I would like to be
able to short the stock, say 1000 at 15 (and cover the short later)
while keeping my original 2000 intact. While some brokerages
let you specify your action (Buy, Sell, Short sell) others like Datek
have only two options - Buy or Sell. How do I short against the
box in this case? How are the other Datek users doing this?
Are they using two accounts - one for long term and another
for short term plays ?
Also what are the other benefits of shorting against the box?
I have heard that it can be used to circumvent the uptick
rule. How is this done? Any explanation would be appreciated.
Thank you.
