Bonds last week fell back into what has recently become a familiar pattern, with their prices rising when those of stocks declined. There was little market-moving economic news and not much chatter about what the Federal Reserve will do when it meets just about a month from now. Many analysts are looking for another quarter-percentage-point increase in the central bank's target for overnight rates, but a minority is saying the Fed might let a meeting pass without raising rates. Meanwhile, revenue continues to pour into the Treasury, suggesting it will be difficult to avoid additional reductions in the frequency and size of future auctions of Treasury securities.
This week's bill auctions will be delayed until Tuesday because of the Memorial Day holiday. Treasury will sell $8.5 billion in three-month bills, $7.5 billion in six-month bills and $10 billion in one-year bills. In when-issued trading Friday, the bills yielded 5.87, percent, 6.37 percent and 6.34 percent, respectively.
