I don't identify with the family thing like you do. I don't think, in retrospect, that my family was any more disfunctional than any other, but I was just a child when I discovered that you're stuck with your family but you choose your friends. Even then, I was very much into choice.
My blood family consists of an elderly father, who is very dear to me. I was married for 8 years a very long time ago but am no longer in contact with my ex or his family. (My father is in touch with him--go figure.) I was an overprotected only child, married too young, and needed to get out and be on my own. Never had kids. There are some cousins, but I don't know exactly where. For me, family is the friendships and alliances you forge through honor with people who are under no obligation to accept you.
the basic building block of any society, is imho the family
My personal experiences notwithstanding, I recognize on an intellectual level that this is true. It is part of international law, U.S. law, common law, and common sense.
And so I support Juan Miguel not because family is in my bones but because it is in the law.
