This scenario wasn't supposed to be even possible. Korea was supposed to so firmly in the cdma2000 corner that even the possibility of W-CDMA was expected to be out of the question.

Would DoCoMo be planning to purchase a piece of SK Telecom if W-CDMA is out of the question? No. Would Bloomberg be reporting Ericsson and Nokia promising lower IPR fees and the government demanding lower fees if this would not be happening? I doubt that. Are the leaks from Unicom's advisers really completely fabricated? Come on.

No matter what eventually happens, the Koreans think that they can squeeze Qualcomm's IPR demands substantially lower. If you believe Piecyk, Qualcomm's IPR was supposed to be ironclad. "The same patent fees from all 3G flavors"; remember?

Now - what happened to the "same" fee story? How much is the "ironclad" IPR fee going to ultimately be? It seems that it is now changing monthly - concessions keep flowing to China and Korea. Looks like the negotiating power resides in Asia right now. Who exactly is being desperate here? Who was desperate during the DDI negotiations?
