If the die cost 50% more to produce due to current size and initial testing costs, and yields are half of SDRAM, cost is 300% higher. If yields are one third, cost is 450% higher. Don't know if this is the case, but there has been speculation and there have been comments from some companies that their particular Rambus process doesn't or didn't yield nearly as well as their SDRAM process.

It's very easy for costs to go up if yields are bad. OTOH, correct your yield problems and costs can plummet overnight.
