Qualcomm, the leader in cdma2000 technology, also expressed its intention to offer better terms over its European competitors

Of course, the news story that DoCoMo is looking at taking a 10% position in KT adds more stakes and byzantine twists to yet another play. As IJ said in February, "it's a land grab out there."

re. idler's query: Ericy offer to reduce "royalty rates" to Korean carriers: given that the stakes are huge, is it possible Ericy could be "packaging" its effective "royalty rate" with a reduction in its budgeted operating margins to offer a reduced "rate" deal? i.e., Ericy passes through Q's effective rate, discounted by Ericy margin squeeze. Risky business, that.
