re: a July draft for 10GbE 802.3ae

Kenneth,

Maybe this was in reference to a first draft for the OC-192 adaptation of 802.3ae? Or, does this mean the entire suite, or the bulk of the 10GbE standards for all media forms?

I was of the opinion that 802.3ae 10GbE in its larger context wasn't due for pub and review until 1Q01 with final rarification slated sometime during the fourth Q of 22001. If they "are" talking about the general draft, then it means that this measure accelerates the release date by ~ three full quarters. Perhaps someone closer to the standards committee issues can clarify this?

[[I think that this issue of GbE being encapsulated in a smaller OC-192 frame really raises an interesting point And that is, While the IEEE protocol (10GbE) over lambda represents an opportunity to break away from legacy SONET entanglements (you there MikeM?), the framing of SONET is still preceived to be a requirement by those who look to implement it in this form. One has to wonder if this will carry over from the WAN to the Metro, for the majority of those ports which will be supporting 10GbE.]]

Or course, vendors are already perched to come out with their own pre-standards products now, with the commitment to upgrade them when the standards are ratified. Caveat emptor, though.. because these pledges have been known to backfire in the past, and the remedies are not always palatable.
