The Italian and Swiss press carried stories yesterday reporting that friends of Tornay's said there was a lot of bad blood between him and his commander. One, said to be the mother of Tornay's ex-girlfriend in Rome, said Estermann threatened to ''make life difficult'' for Tornay if he was made commandant. [...]

The way I see it now is that Col. Estermann was using Cedric Tornay as a rent boy in his honey-trap scheme to frame some Vatican bigwigs. After all, Tornay was his best decoy: a 20-something looker with a lower-middle-class background (a former garage mechanic) and a spliff smoker.... That was enough ammo for Estermann to sweat Tornay into swishing with a couple of Cardinals.
For, even if Tornay niggled Estermann's plot and "publicly" raised the issue (say, by reporting it to an ecclesiastic), he would have stood no chance against Estermann: a toke-addict snotcake vs. the Pope's savior! Moreover, even if Estermann was eventually punished, it could not have prevented him from muckracking.... At that point, Tornay would be uncovered as the damned whistleblower, anyway.
On the other hand, if Tornay agreed to be in on Estermann's ploy then he'd just get his fair share of the money --maybe more than enough to start his own motor-mechanic shop, back home.... |
