As I mentioned, there are so many bestseller lists on Amazon that it's a little like elementary school award ceremonies, where they'll invent an achievement if it looks like some product/student is going unrecognized.

The only way I can see Amazon's business plan working is if we swing the other way psychologically, and everyone assumes that an Internet business - to - consumer store CAN'T work. There probably will be a time when it will be next to impossible to obtain seed money for Internet retail sites, when the field is littered with broken bodies of obscure and well known names.

In the used book field Alibris is spending a lot of money to obtain inventory of books that most used book stores can't give away, while a smaller, low-key cooperative, ABE, is doing just fine working with established bricks and mortar places.
