I do not have any special insight into the factors surrounding Son giving advice to Taiwan's President Chen, but Son could possibly provide a bridge between Mainland China and Taiwan (If that is ever going to be possible). Recall that Son is the CEO of UTStarcom (UTSI) and they are doing business in Mainland China even though they are headquartered in the United States. I think that Son must have considered all of the possible interactions very carefully before accepting such a high profile position as Advisor to Chen. Some of this may transcend pure business considerations and we should all recall Son's comment that if he were not pursuing business he might have settled on Politics. I think that there is more going on behind the scenes in the current public hostility between Mainland China and Taiwan than is apparent on the surface. I hope it is not anything related to the notion that the Mainland Chinese have Bill Clinton in their pocket so they have to take advantage of that before he leaves office.
