From what I've seen, AMAT is no better at forecasting industry weakness than anyone else. In late 1997, after the Asian financial crisis hit, James Morgan was on CNBC saying that the semiconductor makers had no choice but to buy equipment. Wrong! Lam CEO James Bagley, on the other hand, was much more pessimistic in his outlook, and continued to make pessimistic statements through the first half of 1998, which turned out to be about right. (So if anybody hears anything from Bagley, please share it.)
