r surkla, re: RDRAM power.
I finally reviewed the white paper you referenced. While it's almost a year old, it does raise all the questions that make comparisons to DRAM difficult.

From the white paper:

The memory interface monitors a thermal sensor in each RDRAM to determine when the recommended operating temperature has been exceeded. If excess heat becomes a problem, the memory interface can restrict the number of devices in the active mode or reduce the device access rate to lower power consumption and reduce heat.

I some cases, Rambus will consume more power than conventional DRAM because more devices can be performing or ready to perform useful work simultaneously....

What would be interesting is the real world applications that result in these "cases" and the impact on performance.

One of the problems I have is that most of the issues of Rambus relative to PC100/133 have many interpretations. There seem's to be a lot of "spin" in the Rambus presentations that are readily attacked by other sources. Whether it be benchmarks, bandwidth, latency, power and heat, etc., there don't seem to be definitive technical responses that clear up the issues. Arguments are made that either device types are superior, and that's a problem for me. There are too many "if this and/or that" conditions that apply.
