Motorola/ORBCOMM............... ------------------------------------------------------------ Wednesday May 31, 9:02 am Eastern Time Company Press Release SOURCE: ORBCOMM Global, L.P. Motorola to Resell ORBCOMM Satellite Data Communications Services Motorola Market Solutions Division to Market SPATIA(R) Utility Monitoring and Control Products DULLES, Va., May 31 /PRNewswire/ -- ORBCOMM Global, L.P. (ORBCOMM), the first commercial provider of global low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite data communication services, today announced that the Motorola (NYSE: MOT - news) Market Solutions Division, based in Scottsdale, AZ, will become a reseller of ORBCOMM satellite communications services used in Motorola's SPATIA© utility portfolio management solution.
The SPATIA solution is a Web-based system that enables commercial and industrial customers and utilities to access data and control equipment in difficult-to-read sites using the ORBCOMM wireless data network. The system allows commercial and industrial users to reduce utility costs and improve operational efficiency through detailed management of utility usage across the customers' entire enterprise. For utility companies, the SPATIA solution provides the ability to understand their customer usage better by creating detailed load profiles. Motorola plans to use the Stellar Satellite Communications (Stellar) ST2500 subscriber communicator (SC) to send and receive critical information via the ORBCOMM network. Stellar has customized the ST2500 to meet the unique requirements of the SPATIA solution.
``Having Motorola as a reseller is a tremendous advantage for ORBCOMM,'' said Scott L. Webster, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of ORBCOMM. ``Motorola brings its substantial technical and marketing capabilities to an important group of ORBCOMM customers. The benefits of the SPATIA solution include reduced power outages and improved service quality, which are vital to electrical power utilities and industrial and commercial customers. This is exciting news for ORBCOMM and for utility companies looking for an edge in a competitive marketplace.''
``The ORBCOMM satellite network dramatically enhances the SPATIA solution's deployment options by providing a critical link to sites that are outside of traditional communications infrastructures,'' said Karen Caldwell, Director of Utility Solutions for the Motorola Market Solutions Division. ``The SPATIA solution was developed to help customers optimize their water and power resources, and now Motorola and ORBCOMM will work together to deliver the latest in satellite-based remote monitoring solutions to a broader market.''
The SPATIA solution features ``near real-time'' monitoring and control from a central location and aggregates utility usage, develops load profiles with benchmarking to set efficiency standards and provides notification information from parameters set by the user. The SPATIA solution enables customers to create easily understood graphs and charts based on utility-consumption data that they can access through secure Internet connections, e-mail or File Transfer Protocol (FTP).
Motorola and Salt River Project (SRP), the Phoenix-based water and power utility that originally developed the SPATIA solution, recently signed an alliance that gives Motorola responsibility for the future development and customer service operations for SPATIA.
