There will be several versions of GPRS - and that's the key advantage. The yokel model will only work on either mobile data or voice - you can't do both simultaneously. Those phones can come in below 500 dollars and under 160 grams. The high-end models will do both simultaneously and the network infra can be upgraded to improve gradually.

I know people like to make fun of HSCSD - but the new Nokia model is just 140 grams and can deliver 40 kbps speed. What's best - it exists! I have cradled it in my arms and stroked it softly. It's here now. Not in some virtual universe of a laptop demo.

GPRS and HSCSD will coexist peacufully; affordable, light phones with moderate data transfer speed. It's the mass market approach to mobile internet and we should not hold a wake until we see the actual consumer response. As far as I know, you can't do HDR cheaply.

It's already obvious that most PC users simply don't want 1 Mbps. They are happy with 56 kbps as long as it is dirt cheap and easy to get. Broadband wackos are ignoring the profound disinterest most consumers show towards super high data transfer if the price is too high and products too cumbersome.
