Many honorable people wait to write a autobiography of that nature until after the participants are dead, so as not to cause distress to them in their lifetimes.

Geoffrey Perret, whose 1999 biography of Eisenhower was just as highly praised as the work of Ambrose, concluded that Eisenhower was not honest in his denials of the affair, but that their involvement was less than Summersby claimed.

Again, Summersby was there, and no one has ever suggested a credible reason for her to lie. When she wrote the book she was dying, she didn't need the money, and the story painted her in a negative light, involving as it did an affair with a married man.
