Eric, readers can follow the deliberations of WRC 2000 here.

That's what I've been doing. You always cut out the satellite stuff which I think is just as important and interesting.

An important result so far as the Q is concerned has been
the identification of 1710-1885 MHz for terrestrial IMT-2000. This will allows Brazil's regulatory body Anatel to harmonise it PCS frequencies with that of it neighbors such as Peru and Argentina that already use 1900Mhz for PCS as does much of the rest of the Western Hemisphere. Contrary to some ill-tempered arguements made in a recent GSM World article, a choice of 1800Mhz for PCS would hamper roaming by Brazilians as most of their travel is inter-hemispheric. The arguement by the European 1800Mhz PCS crowd that Anatel can't allocate 1900Mhz for PCS because they'll need it for IMT-2000 just lost its strength.

For those lurkers wondering 1800Mhz or 1900Mhz for PCS what's the difference so far as CDMA is concerned? The difference is that for 1900MHhz PCS, GSM, TDMA, and CDMA equipment is available while for 1800Mhz nearly all the equipment is GSM only and mostly European as a result of the European 1800Mhz PCS band being exclusively GSM.
